I just wrote a module for a client called "trail menu" which implements a feature maybe interesting enough to include it in menu block:
Trail menu displays a menu containing the active trail's menu items followed by the children of the last menu item of that trail (the currently active menu item). It's somewhat similar to a drill-down into the menu...
I've attached pictures to make things a little clearer. In this example I've chosen to present the primary links in its standard block as well as a menu trail version of it. Of course I / the client can think of some options like showing the siblings of the active item or not, but they're not implemented yet.
