from the readme

Now start the solr application by opening a shell, changing directory to apache-solr-1.2.x/example, and executing the command java -jar start.jar

I dont really understand how im supposed to run this command, using fireftp I tried executing it via the custom command option but it said unknown command

You need shell access to run that command. If your host does not offer shell access, it may allow you to run commands through some web admin interface.
