Hi

I am getting a grey line and the links when logged in as admin and just the grey line when not logged in

this only happens on one block

some custom html placed in a header of a view

I really want rid of the grey line.

any suggestions?

I dont mind disabling the edit links entirely from in th code

The html for the edit block links is NOT present when you are not logged in. So the grey line must be caused by something else.

I am still getting the edit links showing when logged in (only on view with custom header) even though
they are switched off in theme settings.

the grey lines are still a mystery to me, I have searched all through my css and cant find the problem

The Views module has its own set of edit links. If you are seeing brackets around the edit link text (i.e. “[edit]”), then those are definitely not Zen’s block editing links.
