Hi,
I would very much like to use taxonomy_image images in a panel-pane when I use the taxonomy termid or termname as context , because I think it will look great! And will add to the great flexibility of panels in relation to taxonomy.
Would this be doable? How to proceed?

Either the taxonomy image module a module in its stead will need to create a content type that uses the taxonomy term context to produce the image and display it. See Michelle's article on creating content types here: http://shellmultimedia.com/articles/creating-content-type-ctools-panels-3

Panels itself will likely only come with content that supports core for the moment, but providing this content should not be too difficult for someone to do and either submit as a patch or release a module for.
