I have seen a few tutorials but it always seems like at one point or another they go off on a tangent or dont even explain anything. Is there any good in depth tutorial to follow? Maybe a book or two?

I dont really need the CSS part of theming but more along the lines of the tpl.php pages and the index.php and files that go with it.

Any help?

Get on the iTunes shop and search drupal podcasts - there are plenty on the basics of theming and they're free.
