Dynamically add CSS based on menu selection or path

I am a drupal newbie trying to dynamically include a css file based on the url being loaded. I have a node type of location with a node-location-tpl.php file. When a page with this node is rendered I want to include an additional css. I have see references in the forum to drupal_add_css(), but can't make sense of what to do with this method.
