I am nervous about upgrading. I run 5.1 and I would like someone to help me through the first upgrade so that I can do it next time. I have a background in computers and run a nonprofit organization. So far Drupal has been great and I have worked on it for two years. The upgrading process for the system scares me. Can anyone help and give me some advice? I read the information on line, and still don't feel right about doing it on my own. Thanks, Mindy

More information needed

First of all, you should probably tell to what version you intend upgrading (5.16 or 6.10). Then it would be essential to know something more about your setup (what operating system you run, what kind of access you have to the server). Last but not least, we should know which modules are installed, as some modules need special care (in the worst case scenario, some modules might not even be maintained anymore, or there might not be an upgrade path; in that case, things could become complicated).

It would be probably much better to try to upgrade to the latest version of everything in the 5.x branch, and check everything is still ok, before attempting an upgrade to Drupal 6. In any case, make sure to make a complete of your site and your database before doing anything.

Having recently done a D5 to

Having recently done a D5 to D6 upgrade, I am pretty sure that upgrading to the latest version of D5 is absolutely vital before going to D6. There are a few third party modules that require the latest D5, but I don't remember which ones.

As for difficult modules, CCK and Views probably are the toughest ones... CCK because of all the various additional field modules and Views because of its major changes which require extra work converting views created in D5 to the D6 versions. I would make sure that you have a good handle on what your D5 Views do and how they are configured before you begin. Also, knowing how to setup D6 Views would be good.

I am running drupal on siteground, and my machine at home is OS X - mac. I planned to upgrade to D5. From what you are saying, I should upgrade do 5.16 right off? I am using:

Adsense, Image, Mime Mail, Simple News and Digest, Contact Real Name, Content Type Cleanup, Custom Error, Email Registration,

FckEditor (I need to upgrade from 2.2-rc3 to 2.2), Forward, Global Redirect, Google Analytics, HTML Mail, Pauthauto, Persistent Login,

Site Menu, Syndication, Taxonomy Access Control, Theme Setting ATI (needs update from 2.7 to 2.8), Token, Update Status, Upgrade

Status, printer friendly pages, CAPTCHA, Views (not so much, I can easily delete before upgrade), XML sitemap.

AM I using too many? I can try to delete some?

Thanks, Mindy

That is not a lot of

That is not a lot of modules.. I am running about twice as many.

Excluding Views, I was able to upgrade Adsense, Custom Error, FckEditor, Google Analytics, Pathauto, Token, CAPTCHA and Update Status with no problems. But IIRC Update Status is part of D6 and must be removed and uninstalled before doing the D6 upgrade - there is no contributed module.

I also think I did Theme Setting API as well...
