I was able to successfully create a filter and make it exposed. The exposed filter was presented as a text box. Is there a way an exposed filter can be a list of distinct values available from a drop down list or other widgets?

Not easily. The Table Wizard would need to define a filter handler for any field to be handled this way, and we wouldn't want to automatically do it for all fields - so, we would need to add something like a checkbox on the analysis page for you to indicate fields you want to treat as enums, more or less.
