Configure the Pathauto Module
Install and enable the Meta Tags Module.
Install enable the Page Title Module
Do NOT install the Drupal Sitemap Module.
Fix .htaccess to redirect to "www" or remove the "www" subdomain.

Don't forget the theme!
Don't forget your theme can also help SEO. Most sites I make are based on the Zen theme. The document structure of Zen is optimized for SEO: http://drupal.org/node/201428.

Im not sure about the sitemap. I just got that from the link above.
Try the SEO Checklist Module
It has a list of everything you need to do and helps you to keep track of things that you've already done:

SEO, traffic, and revenue manual
FYI, I've been making my own "manual" for SEO, traffic generation, etc. What I'm trying to do is boil down the tons of advice and info I find out there, into a simple manual and to-do list for my sites.
It's still in progress, and it'll keep changing as I apply the advice to my own sites, but FWIW you can see my manual online:
http://www.drupalace.com/STARDOM
The page http://www.drupalace.com/STARDOM/SEO is most focused on SEO, but many other pages address it too; the activities that can be filed under SEO are really broad!
I welcome corrections and additions. I'd like it to be useful for any Drupaler trying to achieve goals with a site.
