Would it be possible to add a link to '/project/issues/search?issue_tags=Novice' in the Contributor links box?

I think that this will help novice contributors quickly and easily find issues at their skill level.

Queue clean up.

As best as I can tell, this has been solved with the new Novice tag in the issue queues.
If not feel free to reopen.

@VeryMisunderstood, this requires a user to go into the issue queue, happen to find an issue with the novice tag, and click on it. They may not even be aware that such functionality even exists in the first place.

I think if there was a 'xx Novice issues' menu entry under 'Queues' in the Contributor Links block, it would help direct our less experienced contributors into a good place for them, rather than have them jump into the main issue queue, where the majority of issues are beyond a 'novice' skill level.

Resetting as 'Active'.

There are now 108 issues marked with "Novice"; apart the apparent arbitrariness in tagging an issue so, what could be the advantage of such link?

brianV’s picture

@KiamLaLuno - The advantage is that novice developers could easily find the novice issues. Currently, they are tough for a new developer to locate.

The link I am suggesting goes to the 'Novice' tag page, same as clicking on a 'novice' tag.

How would you suggest a user find a list of novice issues?

I agree, a novice developer having to dig through the issues to locate an issue with a novice tag is a bit lame and unrewarding.

However, if users were to use: http://drupal.org/project/issues/search/drupal?version[0]=156281&status[... and type novice into the tags field, then the issues can be sorted by the novice tag.

Maybe this should be thrown over to redesign. I can see where having links handy in the contributor links blocks for each level "novice" "intermediate" and "advanced" (or however they are currently tagged) could be handy for everyone.

@VeryMisunderstood

The problem is, a novice / 'new-to-drupal' developer will often as not have no idea the 'novice' tag exists to type it into the 'Search Issue Tags' box. The only way to find out that it exists is to through random chance stumble on an issue that has been tagged 'novice'.

To me, this is a quick fix which would instantly make the d.org project / issues system far more accessible & friendly to new developers.

I understand and agree.

Though I don't know how many changes are going to be made before the new design is released (no idea when that is).
I can't manipulate blocks thus it will take someone with high perms than I to take care of this issue.

Alright. I am moving back to active, so hopefully it will appear in the queue for someone with the appropriate permissions to decide on.

moving to site organization as this is more of feature implementation than a text improvement.

I still have to understand the purpose of such tag, and why people would be looking for issues marked with that tag, or why they would need to look for all the issues marked in that way rather than searching in the issues for a specific project.

Kiam,

New user comes to drupal.org
new user wants to get involved
new user wants to start with novice items to get their feet wet (at this point how does a novice user know where to get novice work to do?)

That said, using brianv's idea.
new user clicks "menu item" that links to ALL novice issues and works with what he or she can work with and can step up to intermediate when they feel they are ready and advanced as well.

The idea is much the same as sorting anything else by a tag, ie: modules or themes.

Personally, I'm starting to this this is a very good idea, as it would give exposure to issues that need work, rather than asking someone (especially a novice) to just go "find" an issue they an work on that would interest them. Right now I'd say it's a fishing expedition to locate issues tagged a specific way and that novice developers (specifically those new to d.o) would benefit form this idea the most.

These links could also be considered for placement in the "Developer Links" block rather than the "contributor links block"

avpaderno’s picture

I guess that novice users know there are issue they can contribute to, and those issues are marked with the tag Novice.
It's the first time I heard of that, and that is why I was wondering the purpose of all this.

Thanks for clarifying this, VeryMisunderstood.

+1 for this being useful. Hopefully this minor modification could significantly increase the rate of interested potential developers' conversion to being active contributors.

Bumping and +1. With the Dashboard this could be another block but given what is in Contributor links now (performance issues, patch bingo), this addition makes sense and is not overwhelming. (And precisely because we'll be directing new users to the novice tag, seasoned contributors have reason to check in there also.)

I think this was close to agreement, could someone RTBC?

Proposed link (added status open) and wording:

http://drupal.org/project/issues/search?status[]=Open&issue_tags=Novice

Novice-accessible issues

"Novice-level issues"? "Novice-doable issues"? "Issues a novice can do"? I gave it my best idea.

As a novice developer I always look for feature requests, minor priority tickets, and support requests within Contrib which I use. Just because I don't expect (again, as a novice,) .. or maybe as a semi-employed guy with limited time .. to be able/willing to jump right in on stuff I don't have or need.

I was just looking at Bug bingo, and thinking it would be awful easy to at least (optionally) sort down from modules I had not posted an issue on. I suppose if people had to register to download modules it would be really easy to keep their relevancy sphere together. I wonder how many clicks it would take to get me to a bug that might even be occurring on my systems is all.

+1 for this link.

I started with drupal issue queue several times in the past and never made a single patch, until some one mentioned the 'novice' tag. This will definitely help newbies get started.

+1 for 'Novice level issues '.
