Lullabot Drupal Podcast No. 1

jjeff - January 16, 2006 - 15:33

The first of our weekly Drupal podcasts is now online. This episode is an intro to Lullabot and what we do along with a cursory overview on the current state of Drupal.

Future podcasts will include:
- Intro to Drupal
- Intro to drupal.org
- Developing for Drupal
- Designing for Drupal
- "Important" Drupal modules
as well as Drupal news, reviews, interviews, and opinions.

In addition to the weekly audio podcast, Lullabot will also be publishing Drupal tutorial videos. The latest video demonstrates how to install Drupal 4.7.

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for the podcast you can call 877.LULLABOT (877.585.5226 within the U.S. and Canada), contact us here, or leave comments on the podcast entry itself. We'd love to hear from you.

I've subscribed!

Great job with the podcast, guys. It sounds great and gives a very human face to Drupal. :) Definitely looking forward to future installments!

Bandwidth Exceeded!!

pillguy - January 16, 2006 - 22:25

So you guys need mirrors? I have a few GB a month to spare if so.

haha

matt westgate - January 16, 2006 - 22:36

You saw that too, eh?

I had the bandwidth limit set pretty low, but it's bumped up now. Soon we'll be co-hosting the videos here on drupal.org, so we should be good. If we need some extra space for the podcasts we may take you up on the offer.

Thanks!

mirrors

gordon - January 19, 2006 - 00:04

Hi,

If you want a mirror I am quite happy to give you some of my bandwidth. I am with Dreamhost and I have 1TB a month to use. I am no where even getting close to that.

I could probably give you around 300 GB a month

Gunnar Langemark - January 19, 2006 - 11:56

I could probably give you around 300 GB a month on my current plan.

Which reminds me: - would it be cool to make a pool?

A sort of opt in traffic sharing program - perhaps a module too?
Like bittorrent or something like that.

I envision a sort of closed cirquit (only contributors get access to upload ... )

Is it feasible?

So that's how you pronounce drupal

tidalx3 - January 17, 2006 - 01:07

So that's how you pronounce drupal

I guess I got it somewhat right. somewhat.

Can't wait ...

profix898 - January 17, 2006 - 18:37

Really cool. I can't wait to here and see new ones.
I think you are on the right way. Thanks.

to be honest

gobblez - January 19, 2006 - 18:56

To be completely honest, i spaced out the whole time. I tried paying attention when I heard you mention the new Forms API, because I know that is something important that I need to learn. It just seemed like the random chatter that you hear on a college radio station late at night, no offense on your effort, but thats what it seemed like. I don't know what you're goal with the podcasts are, whether as an audio tutorial or infomercial for your drupal service. But if it's for learning purposes, I think it would be better if sticking to just one topic per podcast, and cover that one topic from intro to beginning to advanced. If you have bandwidth issues, why not put your cast on one of those podcast hosting websites? At the same time it would appear on rankings and get drupal more exposure. I could be wrong about those services though, I never tried them. It's your podcast though :) It is good to hear other people talking about Drupal. Thanks for doing this.

great feedback

matt westgate - January 19, 2006 - 21:10

Thanks for the feedback. I space out too when I listen to it again. It really was a sort of dry run to see how it would go. Jeff and I are scheduled to do a podcast tomorrow and we've got one topic and a mini-script in hopes of providing a better production.

Use Google Video - it's free. No bandwidth limit!

levavie - January 26, 2006 - 22:48

Matt, there is a better solution!

It's best to use Google Video! No bandwidth limit! And it's free to use (or you can even sell advanced courses for a fee if you want).

A Good Start Point for Embedding Google Videos

levavie - February 9, 2006 - 18:49

The code is quite simple - the follwing links may help. I will be glad if somebody can create a drupal module to automatically generate them. This will be a huge saving in the cost of servers which are needed in order to support good video broadcasting in drupal.

The following link may be a good start point
HOW TO Quickie: Embedded Google Videos at PaulStamatiou.com

Also, please Google it for "Embed Google Video" and you will a lot more info.

Wishing you success - and please update us.

Secret knowledge

jeff h - February 15, 2006 - 05:40

Hi... great job on your pod and videocasts :)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be really interested to see you put together a guide on providing our own Drupal-powered podcasts, as you have done.

I've read numerous discussions here on drupal.org regarding podcasting and come away a little hesitant.

Jeff

Not much of a secret

matt westgate - February 15, 2006 - 16:30

It's dead easy in 4.7. Enable upload module, create a node of any type and attach the audio file. That's what we're doing on Lullabot.

iTunes tags etc

jeff h - February 16, 2006 - 10:19

Thanks for your reply :) Great to hear you say you're using just the basic 4.7 functionality. Can you comment on topics such as:

* I have read that iTunes needs special XML tags. Other people have written Drupal modules specially to provide these. Have you found it works fine without them?

* do you acctually upload your files using the upload module in 4.7 (rather than FTP)? If so, have you had to do anything to get Drupal to allow such massive file sizes? Did you have to set the PHP upload_max_filesize to something huge? Was that a problem?

* I read that iTunes can't handle a file path with a ? in it. This seems to mean that you can't use Drupal's private file method to distribute your podcast? That's probably fine for podcast files, but the setting is all or none ie if you want to podcast, ALL your files (podcast and otherwise) are going to have to be publicly accesssible to anyone, regardless of role.

Thanks so much for your help.

Jeff
