It would be nice to see PDF support added. For example. I upload a pdf file to a node and display it in a flash viewer (a la Scribd.com) using swf(file.pdf). I know that there is a module for embedding scribd.com documents. This would have the advantage over that module because your documents remain on your server and do not have to be uploaded to scribd. This would allow site owners to control access to their documents and possibly charge users for access.
Good idea?

Stuart Greenfield commentedTo do this we'd need to have a flash PDF viewer. The iPaper format that scribd uses isn't generally available, so I'm not sure what the other options are.
jmary commentedI think the idea is to protect the content of a PDF file inside a flash file.
The point is that it is already existing a pdf2swf converter on linux systems (swftools package under debian and ubuntu, I'm not sure for debian because they are picky with proprietary formats but I'm sure for ubuntu).
So I'm here with a PDF converted to SWF and I can display it, but the pages are playing like a diaporama. I tried to force simpleviewer to be used, but it doesn't want it.
jmary commentedThis is how I solved that. It is very simple.
It is necessary to use the command pdf2swf in order to transform the pdf into swf.
pdf2swf -bl -o document.swf document.pdf
Then upload the swf file.
Then create a page and input the normal way :
[swf file="document.pdf"]
then it works.

drupdruppalpal commentedhi,
I am also very interested in this feature, in order to view pdf of a FileField with flash at a viewer like pdf2swf + rfxview.
greetings

Stuart Greenfield commentedWith pdf2swf isn't it just a case of converting the pdf to a swf (off-line from your Drupal site), and then uploading the resulting swf straight in to the site as normal?
tinohuda commentedI agree,
I think will be great if there is a module can do to convert pdf attached files when click by user then view it using pdf viewer based on swf.
figure:
1. Admin upload pdf files, using upload module (core)
2. Anonymous user klik attached pdf file, then server convert it on the fly like #3, new swf file created by server and ready to view using swf viewer.
thanks.
lelizondo commentedwouldn't it be easier to create a cck module to do this and then use swftools to display the field?
Stuart Greenfield commentedI agree - SWF Tools primary purpose is to display swf content, or to display content in an swf based player. To me a module that converts pdf to swf is a good idea, but it's not a core part of SWF Tools.
SWF Tools is getting better at supporting CCK, so doing it via CCK would seem the right way to go. It sounds like this feature request actually identifies the need for a completely new module!
lelizondo commentedunless someone has a better idea, I think this is a "won't fix", at least not by this module.
