Would be cool if you could rename editions

Project:Innovation News
Version:6.x-1.3
Component:User interface
Category:feature request
Priority:normal
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:active

Issue Summary

I was using this module for a while when i realized I couldn't change the names of the editions... just have a choice of number of editions.... and that was it. It would be nice if you could number them by month and year.... and just keep that up as a tag in the database.

Thanks...J

Thank you for your feedback. This is a feature that many users have requested.

Unfortunately at this time I cannot provide a definite release date for future versions of the software, but this feature will certainly be one that we consider for future versions.

Thanks!

Hi,

1. Using 'Editions'. We want to be able to create collections of articles into a magazine. We had a question about the IN modules, can we customise Editions in the way that we could customise an interface using CCK.

We need to be able to make name changes to the Edition, add ISSUU features, eCommerce and a raft of other details.

2. Images in the IN system. We can see that IN uses Image attach to associate images to articles, can you tell us how we distribute the images throughout an article, and can we give editors the capability to specifically place the images.

Many thanks

Thank you for the questions and the suggestions, mrchristian.

Customizing Editions
I'm afraid I don't exactly understand what you mean by customizing editions using an interface like CCK. I would, however, be inclined to say that editions are not as customizable as CCK features are. You can put articles into editions, remove them from editions, and generate XML documents for each edition.

I absolutely understand your concern -- this isn't nearly as flexible as we wish it was. One feature we have talked about implementing (treating editions as Drupal taxonomy terms) would actually relieve some of these problems and provide much more flexibility, but unfortunately the focus of the lab this year has been on other tasks.

Image Placement
Unfortunately, this is again an area where Innovation News is not as flexible as I wish it was. Image placement cannot be easily modified in an article. This is largely a limitation of current Drupal modules. At the time the Innovation News software was created, there weren't many tools that allowed site contributors to define exact placement of images. Drupal modules have improved since then, but as I said we were not able to incorporate those new features into Innovation News this past year.

However, there is one method that will allow you some control over images. Using Content Templates and CSS, you should be able to modify the default placement of images, however this method can only define a different "static" placement, not placement that can be controlled by editors. If you would like more information on this method, please let me know.

XML
The basic workflow for generating XML is fairly simple:

  • Add some articles to an edition using the "Manage Editions" tool.
  • Use the "View Editions" tool to list the contents of that edition.
  • On the "View Editions" page for your chosen edition, click "View XML". You can save this document and use it in InDesign to create print documents.

I don't know much more about using the XML with InDesign beyond that point, but I am going to copy our resident print genius on this thread. He should be able to help you use the XML with InDesign effectively. I will have him post his response here.

Thanks again.

Hi OpenPublishing,

Thanks for the reply.

*Customising editions*

What we would like to do is cusomise the node that represents the Edition so that we could add a fgew new things that represent a copy of our magazine.

- Add an ISSUU page turner
- Add in an eCommerce interface as we sell the publications in three ways; as POD book printing, ePub and subscription. So making the node an Ubercart node and then adding CCK fields for the product options is what we need.
- Special feature - we highlight artists projects and we'd want to add in some special images and descriptions for this
- Table of Contents

*Placing images in an article*

Our editors need to have the images placed in specific places or at least have an even distribution of images throughout the article, we also need to add in picture credits along side the images.

*XML output*
AOK I get you here

*Overall*
Since OPenPublishing is looking at a new system and not necessarily an upgrade I think our best option at the moment is a work around, menaing we'd use CCK to make collections of articles and to place images.

This way our content is structured and we can then bring it back into any other system that emerges at a later date.

All best

Simon

Greetings mrchristian,

As you say, our current focus is the system that will ultimately be a bit of a successor to Innovation News. While ISSUU and ecommerce do not seem to be core to this system, we are still partly in a planning phase and as such are very appreciative these ideas. Your notes about special features, tables of content, and image placement are likewise much appreciated.

In the short term, as you say, our major focus is not building these features into Innovation News. That said, because Innovation News is built on Drupal it is can be modified and extended by the many Drupal modules already available. Issuu integration and Ubercart, for example, might provide some of the features you need.

I hope that helps.
