disk-based templates not recognized

I've uploaded my contemplates to sites/all/contemplates and visited /admin/content/templates
I'm still not seeing the usual messages at /admin/content/templates/my-content-type that indicate Drupal is recognizing the templates. I have set the perms to 777 for my contemplates directory and the files therein. I've used this feature on several different sites and it has always worked, and I don't think I'm doing anything differently this time around. For good measure, I also visited /admin/settings/contemplate to see if that would have any effect... templates are still not recognized.
