Modify Scheduler or Node Expire to delete node, rather than merely unpublish?

I'm working on a site that wants to list events, but when the events have passed we would like it's node to be deleted automatically.

I am familiar with PHP on a somewhat basic level. How might I go about this? Is there a module that exists that does this already?
