It would be great if invite could offer the ability for users themselves (not just the admin) to specify the role (s) into which invitees would be registered.

For example, if I have three distinct types of members (nonprofits, companies, individuals), there are several combinations of invitations possible. A nonprofit may invite another nonprofit, or a company or an individual. May be a checkbox that a user with invite permission can check to choose the role? The roles listed here could be those decided by the admin via another setting.

+1 for this functionality. I like the idea of using a checkbox to let the invite-sender select on-the-fly which role the invite is for, as they send the invite.

In terms of settings, what about turning the single select lists on the settings page into multiple select lists, where you can select multiple roles which the inviting-role can invite friends/contacts into? Then, on the invite page, a checkbox would appear for each role, and it would be required to select one, or multiple roles for the invite you're sending?

How's this sound?

What if roles could be used to stablish relationship between users, like a user can invite person X as a FRIEND, person Y as BEST FRIEND, and person Z as ACQUAINTANCE. Each one of the roles are related to specific level of permission to access that user's page. I am trying to create a community where users would be able to store info and pics about personal belongings, so that kind of functionality is absolutely necessary. That way, when a user adds something to his/her page, he/she should be able to select level of visibility/accesibility (PRIVATE, BEST FRIENDS, FRIENDS, ACQUAINTANCE, PUBLIC) Well, I still don't know if I can get that from Drupal...

This is nearly a year old! Anyway, setting to postponed until I have time to look at feature requests. Feel free to submit improvement patches! :)

Closing this (stone-old) issue. I think the proposed functionality really belongs into a user relationship module, where everybody can (cross-)specify their level of relationship.
