What I have in mind is the user getting a free subscription for example if they have collected enough points for various actions...

I notice User Points is integrated with Rules so not sure if custom coding is even required.

Yes, the plan for 6.x-2.x is to provide more integration for this kind of module - using triggers/actions, or Rules, or module hooks. It's rather incomplete at this stage, however.
