Oh dear. This isn't looking good at all. Regular content import is critical functionality for my site. I may have to invest in some time figuring out how to import using phpmyadmin for imports instead.

#11

Junro - July 26, 2009 - 18:01

Yep... exactly same thing for me... we have to invest some (lot of) times figuring out how to import using phpmyadmin. No choices... too many bugs now... we can't always use some code par ci some code par là....

as the site says

"Donations:

If you feel the Node import module is useful, I accept donations via paypal."

Help Robrecht to focus on the job by donating.

There are on average 3000 downloads a day for this module.

Is anyone helping Robrecht?

If Robrecht needs money, He could make a "Donate for RC5" with how much money he wants.

But we have no news from him since 6 weeks. No reply to mail.

On the project page he wrote:

"Estimated time for node_import-6.x-1.0-rc5 is Sat April 25th."

He should give some news.

Maybe something happens to him, I don't know... I hope not.

As all of us can read here Robretch is working about anyday on module writing on issues: http://drupal.org/user/22598/track
I think the best could be if he purpose an amount to get to end the RC5, so we all together can reach this amount, we hope soon as possible.

"Robretch is working about anyday on module writing on issues:" It doesn't mean he's working about anyday on module....

This link shows all issues Robretch has participated.

The last post writing by him is:

On an open source project, people generally give their time usually without asking for anything in return.

It is generally a gester of their generosity.

But it gets to a point when people lose motivation for this, when others continue to ask for more without helping out and giving back.

People don't work for free. They can do whatever they want with their own time.

Totally agree with you!

But the only thing when you create such module, is to inform the Drupal community if there's something wrong. The community (is it the right word?) can help, help to raise money for example, or looking co-mainteners. It's what a open source community is for.

There's absolute no problems about losing motivation. It's normal when you spend a lot of times working for nothing. You have to be very interresting in open source project like a hooby.
Lot of developpers work for free because they love Drupal and they enjoy to spend their free time to work on modules. It's a passion.

Like I said, there no problems about module devellopers stopping their activities, forever or just few months.

The only thing you have to do when you're part of a community is to give some news :)

It's a great module and lot of people would like to have some news.

ps:In order to award great modules (such Node import if rc5^^) and developpers, we should create The Annual Drupal Awards!

does rc5 include og imports?

has it been tested to be working?

would the latest dev branch include this?

EDIT:

I also hope for a future for node_import and the comeback of Robrecht, but at the moment am using feedapi+feedelementmapper+csv parser which supports cck, taxonomy and location imports.

is there an updated date for Node Import? I desperately need a working Drupal 6 version, a realistic ETA would be awesome.

Slightly off topic:

Is there an organization that can somehow formalize donations to open source developers?

I'd suggest to anyone using open source software for commercial purposes, especially corporations profiting wildly from it, to go ahead and try all the stuff out there while striving to identify and build solutions. But when the solution is launched and functioning, it would be nice to have an "after-the-fact" invoice you could present to management showing the benefits of the open source solution, the money saved over commercial software, and a suggested, voluntary donation to be considered to reward people for their efforts. But it would have to be some sort of certified or formalized industry-wide practice.

Right now, if I were to walk into the president's office and suggest a $100 donation to "this guy" who wrote "module X" it would seem like I'm routing random cash payments to strangers over the web. It wouldn't fly. If every possible donation were to go through an audited and reputable board that oversees such contributions, the leadership might be more apt to support these developers - especially when they know that some of their golf buddies "pay" these types of "invoices" too.

(Comments related to discussion above, but feel free to move/split at will?)

I too am also looking for RC-5. I'm really stuck on trying to import dates. I don't even see the option to map date fields on (Step 4 of 8) on Node Import. I see all the other text type content fields, but where I do I see the Date CCK fields? I've been looking at posts online, but they are mostly referring to older versions of Drupal. I really need to get this feature up, so hopefully it comes soon.

Until then, can somebody tell me if I'm missing something as far functionality for assigning csv columns to date fields, or is that only on older than Drupal 6 versions?

#38

squarecandy - November 5, 2009 - 03:31

hey onfrontstreet - you'll find a decent solution for dates underway here: #374346: Can't import date values into Date module fields
hopefully that patch will make its way into rc5 - it's pretty essential for what I'm trying to do as well...

#39

onfrontstreet - November 6, 2009 - 00:28

Thanks square candy. I was able to put the date.inc supported file in there to see the option to set the date. But now I need to get it to import right. Looks like there is a problem with the way the date comes in from the .csv file. Gonna go through that post you sent me a little more the fix the little bugs with it. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
