There are several other logic/coding problems in this file but this one severely breaks output.

Actually, the image module support was added for the 4.6 version, and is merely in the 4.7/cvs versions by default. It'll need to be updated to work with the 4.7 version image.module at some point.
Consider image.module support in the 4.7 version to be alpha until that happens.
