Translation of text strings

Hi,
in release 1.6, new text strings like "Click book to purchase" appear at several places; so far I was not able to translate them through the usual interface (./admin/settings/locale/string/search), so most prabaly they don't run through the t() function. What is the recommended way to localize those text strings? Do I have to edit the module's code, and how do I prevent to lose those translations if the module is updated again?
