Hello,
I don't seem to figure out how to be able to upload images to another content type (e.g. blog, story).

In settings for content type i have activated both "sub-album" and "reference" option - then only reference link ("Insert an existing image") is displayed.

Sub-albums. If you enable a content type as a sub-album the image management tab will appear so you can add images, note that an album is required to store the image(s) and a copy is placed in the sub album. Also, if you already have an album with images and create a sub-album node you will be able to move/copy images from your album to the new sub-album node from the album / image page.
