I'm building a Drupal-based site for a hobby I'm involved in. The Drupal part has gone quite well...I've written the modules I need to write. But I'm in need of some better hosting...DreamHost's shared hosting has worked for me, but this site needs a daemon script to run, and running daemon scripts on shared hosting is not a good idea :) So I'm searching for a VPS solution. DreamHost's VPS will result in my database being on a different server, which will cause serious performance problems. So I'm looking elsewhere.

I'm not expecting high traffic levels (5000 hits per day would surprise me, and if the traffic gets that high it will be mostly anonymous users), and my modules aren't terribly complicated other than some expensive database queries. So how much RAM do I need to look for? Every host I've seen offers more disk space and data transfer than I need, so RAM is really the only variable. If it weren't for the daemon script, this is a site that would be fine on shared hosting.

More importantly than the RAM question, does anyone have any recommendations for specific hosts they have good experiences with for low-end VPS service? I can pay $30/mo if that's what it will take to get something reasonably reliable, but I'd rather spend less if possible. Unmanaged servers are fine, I'm very comfortable with Linux. I've seen a lot of hosts in that price range, but it's hard to know who is good and who isn't...

I highly recommend linode.com.

Compared with other popular VPS solutions linode sells it self giving more resources than the competition on every criteria (more importantly: more ram, more hdd, more bandwidth).

If you appreciate my recomendation and will be using linode then please use my referal link: http://www.linode.com/?r=ce8eb322fb8d00da8c905f7051469cecd065855e . If you dont want to use referal link its okey too, here's a link without referal code: http://www.linode.com

I agree. I have been playing with linode for a while and so far it seems an excellent choice for the money.

I took a long look at Linode last night (and hung out in their IRC channel for a bit). Sounds very interesting...I'm kinda leaning towards them at this point...

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Hi

I would reccomend slicehost

You have to build the server yourself but there are full instructions on how to do it

http://www.slicehost.com/

They are part of rackspace

Check out the price per month, you wont find any cheaper

256 slice 256MB 10GB 100GB $20

Have a look at spry.com I found them awhile ago while searching for a vps to put a client's video site on. There not as cheap and like the others you have to install the server yourself. Full instructions are available as well as a wizard type interface if you need it. It's a solid cpanel, whm with unmetered bandwidth and worth investigating in my opinion

I would like recommend midphase, a business web hosting company which will give you a fast and reliable environment. I have my business Drupal site there, it works very well.

I would like to NOT recommend Midphase. I suffered for 2 years on their shared hosting plan, and I imagine the same ignorant, rude techs and billing reps work with their VPS customers.

seanray’s picture

I have used both shared web hosting and VPS hosting from midPhase, and both of them works very well and my key business site is actually hosted in midPhase VPS.

Their VPS hosting support is different with the Shared web hosting support. And my issue usually can be resolved within 1 hour.

For shared hosting, my site run very stable there, and haven't got a chance to see how bad their service is, but i believe it should be good.

You have to have a look here, it is worth the check
http://www.hotdrupal.com
They have the servers ready for Drupal and u just load it and go..
Steve Brown heads up the team, and they are some smart guys.
Best support I have ever had .. no kidding
The price is easy...

I do not work there. I do host 2 sites there and do not get any kickback..

editing: The servers are hybrid .. fast drives, the best of everything for the drupal servers.. they fly..

I've been there since I moved from Site 5 some time ago and have been very happy.

I'm looking to migrate away from a Dreamhost shared account I've had for several years because their services just are not built to intelligently handle Drupal's requirements beyond anything other than a tiny site (configuration-wise). I've had lots of problems with my site in the past few months as I've added functionality (Lucene_API, etc) and it all points to the throttling that Dreamhost apply. I'll report back on how it goes.

To emphasise how good linode really is, they just added 33% more disk spce to each plan for no better reason than just to be nice to their customers (http://blog.linode.com/2009/04/23/33-additional-disk-space/). My referral link is in above post if one appreciates my recommendation.

Thanks.

Linode just increased memory by roughly 41% over all accounts. Mine jumped from 540m to 768m after my reboot.

Read more here:

Certainly makes it more attractive now.

I advice you take a look at http://www.pr0jects.nl! They have VPS from only 12$/month! and not some crappy 64MB ram VPS like you normally get for that price.
They're from Holland, based in Amsterdam (AMS-IX). They also go under the name of http://www.vpsservers.co.
They're running a Xen Enterprise Cluster with over 20 servers. I've been with them for the past 2 months and 100% uptime!

I have used A2hosting.com for my shared hosting for a long time, and can usually get resolutions w/in 15 min via chat. Very polite, very reliable. Just now needing to go to VPS, which is why I found this page, and looking at what's mentioned above, I think this might be the way to go.

http://www.a2hosting.com/vps-hosting/

Basic Configuration 512 MB10GB 200GB From $14.99/mo.RAM
Intensive 2048MB 10GB 200GBFrom $22.99/mo.
Storage Intensive 512MB100GB200GBFrom $35.99/mo.
The Crusher 4096MB 250GB 1600GB From $89.99/mo.

Somebody would have to beat those prices and be pretty kick-a$$ for me to consider another place.
