I am going to be setting up quite an extensive site with several different sections that should get thousands of hits a day. Several features of the site will have to be custom coded. This will be a site that is half community and half static content. It will also need may different rss feeds.
Two of the cms solutions I am considering are drupal and plone/zope and I am wondering what people think would be better and why.

Zope/Plone has a large learning curve
If you're not familiair with both Drupal or Plone/Zope, I would advice to go with Drupal. The learning curve for Plone and Zope is considerable, and unfortunately you have to learn both in order to use it properly. There were quite some bugs in Plone-2.1.1 left, and many of its extensions (called Products) were not compatible with this release. I've also found developing for Plone difficult, requiring you to run it in debug mode.
Drupals' learning curve is much less great, while its features quite match your requirements. It's easily extensible, and has quite some large community-oriented installations, like www.spreadfirefox.com.
That said, the best advice I can give you is to give both systems a chance, by installing them and trying them out for 1-2 days. Good luck, and do report your findings!
