Its the ones that show different images for, new, pop, locked, etc. posts. Mine just says New in tiny red print, which in my opinion is boring & hard to notice.

Could you point to a site that has those images? It's probably a stylesheet (CSS) issue.

Go to admin/forum/configure (administer » forum » configure) and set the path (forum-icons) to misc.

Depending on your theme, they will be displayed.
