In looking to create a better user experience for media/asset handling, we've been tracking the ongoing development of the Media module --

However, with the release of http://drupal.org/project/filefield_insert image handling (in connection with a wysiwyg) is now pretty simple.

A helper module that extended filefield_insert functionality to Embedded Media Fields would be a nice addition.

Are there any plans for adding this support?

As an aside, wysiwygs drive me crazy, but something like this would make them suck a little less :)

While I can see what you're saying wrt filefield_sources (as that does a subset of what the media module is aiming to do) I'm not following you wrt filefield_insert --

From what I've seen, filefield_insert simplifies the process of embedding the contents of a field into a textarea -- this is a UI improvement, and a usability improvement, and seems to pick up where Media will leave off.

For example, if a developer wanted to utilize a new Content Delivery Network (CDN) within their site, but also wanted to give their users access to work with local files and YouTube, they could simply write the wrapper for their CDN and include it along with the Media module and the YouTube wrapper.

It seems that a module like filefield_insert can complement the ongoing work with the Media module pretty well -- at the very least, it seems like filefield_insert has something to contribute from a UI place --

IMCE, on the other hand -- that's part of the problem.

So what am I missing wrt filefield_insert?

you're right. i apologize for sounding snappy there. i didn't initially give the module more than a cursory glance.

this is precisely the functionality that is next on media's roadmap; perhaps we can just hook in filefield-insert's form into that place (unfortunately as a special case, rather than something more encompassing). alternatively, we could just rip out some of the code and make it more generic.

in any case, yes, that's what's also planned for other resources, such as what are currently handled by emfield. my hope is we can just do it once and be done with it.

this already happens w/ media for d7; also look at #470366: Work with other CCK fields besides FileField/ImageField (Node Reference, Text, Emfield, etc). let's see if we can make this happen better.
