I setup a viewfield with 'force default' unchecked and everything works great. Then I check "force default", provide the '%nid' argument in the arguments text box then when I resave the node the viewfield doesn't display any nodes.
I tried specifying it manually with php code as well, and still nothing.
Am I missing a step somewhere?

Having the same problem. Looks like a patch was made for this problem in the 5.x version (http://drupal.org/node/217757) but doesn't seem to have made it into the 6.x dev release yet.
