Converting from DiscusWare 4 to Drupal

C-Watootsi - January 25, 2006 - 12:56

Afternoon -- I have a large, popular DiscusWare 4 Pro board. I would like to migrate the content and userbase over to CivicSpace/Drupal. I've searched thoroughly on this topic, but have drawn a blank. Has anyone had painless, successful experience of this particular migration?

Regards to you all -- Case.

I haven't even heard about

I haven't even heard about this particular software so there is a good chance that it was never mentioned here on drupal.org and there is no migration script. You will need to write your own.

It's quite a niche, but a nice one ...

Ta for the reply Killes --I thought that might be the case; Discus is a perl board that's super-quick, simple, outputs straight html. I'm just interested in seeing how I can integrate them better without losing what's good about both Drupal and Discus, or losing years of good threads. Shared authentication would be a start,... time to hire a coder! :-)

I am intereted as well

I am interested as well but I am thinking slightly differently.

1. You may want to wait till next few weeks. Discusware 5.0 is coming out with a new version (I hope) that will make it easier to integrate/migrate user base.

2. Instead of migrating to drupal completely, I am thinking about integrating with drupal. In my humble opinion drupal's forum (admin UI) does not have as much user friendliness as discusware for very large message boards. Drupal is CMS but the forum is still maturing. And Discusware is mature fourm but not at all a CMS so both can marry peacefully.

3. My board is huge as well. But discusware serves plain html file vs drupal cached pages. I am afraid I will have to buy extra hardware if I convert everything to Drupal.

If you hire a coder, I will be open to pitch in :)

Same boat, eh?

Hey Killedar -- Thanks for posting. Always nice to hear from Discus devotees. Interesting that you're in the same boat; Discus 5 is coming out in mid-Feb (I hope!:) ) , and updating is obviously a no-brainer.

Discus 5 will have an API that will allow Discus to easily authenticate against an external mySql db, and there is a good chance it will not require any custom coding. It's still the useability that makes Discus a good bet, but we need things like the excellent CiviCRM.

How would you go about wrapping Discus in Drupal though? I think we're the only people on the web talking about this :)

Anyhow -- Cheers and thanks again for picking this issue up, Case.

In case your interested?

I'm starting to work on an ssl module witch will integrate security into Drupal. Might be a good opportunity to do the shared authentication? I'm not familiar with Discus though.

There is now a handbook page for this task:
