In the file you downloaded (either smtp-6.x-1.0-beta3.tar.gz or smtp-6.x-1.x-dev.tar.gz) are two files named INSTALL.txt and README.txt. They have the information you seek.

May I suggest that it would be very easy to simply dump the INSTALL.txt text onto the project page? Having the user have to hunt for the installation information (even though it may seem obvious to you) would be avoided with 5 minutes' work on the project page.
