I installed the htpasswd sync module and it nicely updates the htpasswd file. But how does it update the group file? What is the connection between groups in the group file and Drupal? Taxonomy? Organic groups?

oops - never mind. I re-edited the user and re-assigned them to a role and it updated the group file. For some reason it took two attempts.

There is a bug in the group update, see http://drupal.org/node/437904 for a patch.
I will integrate the change in a few days
