got my left column to the middle (not as easy as it could be; rather fiddly). got page bg color set, header bg color. cannot set any css element for .node or .node-inner. all i want is a node bg color & a node border. should be straightforward: my subttheme.css file, right? i should not have to specify a nodes.css or any extra files - just .nodes or .nodes-inner?

not working. complete fail on any attempt to theme the nodes.

Be sure that your subttheme.css stylesheet is included in your .info file and that you have rebuilt the theme registry. If that is the case, and you still have problems, then please provide more details. Do you use firebug to help analyze your HTML and CSS?
