Ad group choice is not saved

On image ads I created, the ad group stopped being saved when I edit or create an ad - it remains 'default'. It was working but seemed to have stopped. I have 23 ad groups, I am not using channels. Modules enabled are Ad, Ad report and Image Ad.
One possible clue: I believe this started to occur after adding a lot of ad groups - could many ad groups mess something up?

Update: I removed all the additional ad groups to get down to the original 3 I had before. I also enabled Channels. Neither ad group nor channel is saving when I edit an ad.

What happens when you try to save the group? Are there any errors or messages show on the screen? Does anything show up in the Drupal watchdog log? It does not matter how many groups you have.
Groups use Drupal's core taxonomy system. Perhaps use the standard Drupal taxonomy system user interface to add/edit groups -- does that work?
