On the first page of the Cookbook http://drupal.org/handbook/customization/tutorials/beginners-cookbook, there are a couple of problems identified by "dcor" of the Galway Group (see issue #449924: Notes regarding Getting Started and Cookbook docs:
1) Important Drupal Terms section - Should be one sentence following the term.. with a BRIEF description after.. don't refer to other drupal terms (i.e. "path module")... I don't know what that is!
2) "Some preliminary advice"... jumps off a cliff.. and I don't know what I'm following anymore. All of the information is relevant and interesting.. but perhaps it's a bit too early or belongs in a different section.
What I'd like to see here:
Purpose
Background
Important Drupal Terms
Basic description of how Drupal works including the important Drupal Terms discussed
Links to additional information based on what is discussed here.
(The information on the community and on advice.. should be moved to sections near the end of the manual).

MGParisi commentedJhodgdon: I made some changes. I cut out allot. I think it went a bit to far, and was trying to cover to much for an intro to Drupal. I deleted one term, and chop, chop, chop... I think saying more in less is the best thing. I tried to do that. Review my changes, then make some changes of your own. I will then review those and make some more myself. I did not want to go TOO far with this document, because roll back would make me sad!

We used Etherpad to collaborate on the page.
We removed third person, duplication (often by providing links), and additional information. We worked to provide more information with less words. I feel the team did an amazing job! Allot of work has been done by all parties involved. This was a true collaboration.

Barry Madore commentedWhile I helped work on this, my contributions were primarily spelling and grammar related. MGParisi and Steinmb deserve the most credit not just for the writing and editing but also for starting the collaborative session that resulted in the current revision of the page.
I found the Etherpad live collaborative editing tool quite effective as a method for doing this type of group writing/editing. I feel it can serve as a good model for working on documentation. In my estimation, it produced a much-improved page, effecting many of the requested changes (and more) in much less time than would have been likely waiting for individuals to do incremental changes one-at-a-time over time.
Not really related to this posted issue but worth mentioning: I'd love to see more documentation sessions (mini-sprints?) spring up much as this one did via setting up an Etherpad session and inviting those lurking in the #drupal-docs IRC channel to join the process. This got me motivated to devote some time that I would not likely have done otherwise.
Thanks to MGParisi, Steinmb and emmajane who spearheaded this effort.

MGParisi commentedSign me up for any session like that... It was fun, and I must say that it was probably the best single process for document editing I have ever undertaken! It was actually allot of fun too!
