Chat is one of options on page. It is not used often though. I know that this is great way to communicate but I'm also understand users which don't want to keep open one extra window (tab) with chat - just in case.
I think that it will be much better if user will be notified about new message in chat without opening it. It could be popup window or just sound or something else.
Logging in to drupal page itself should be enough to be notified about new messages in chat.

the 6.x-2 branch now alerts users of new messages via a blinking title bar, and popout chats are now also possible.
sound is on the TODO list - #518124: port sound notifications to jQuery plugin.
