I created variations of a theme, following the recommendations in the readme file. The sub themes are working OK if I activate them through the theme UI, but I cannot manage to see them in switchtheme administration page. I can only see 1 subtheme at a time which is not what I want. Is it necessary to duplicate the theme.infofile ?

Yes, each theme needs its own .info file, regardless of whether it is a regular, base, or sub theme.
