Dumb question: When using front_page module, you lose the autodiscoverable main site feed. Is there a code I can drop into the front_page code, or even in my page.tpl.php, to make that available again?

Your page.tpl.php should contain a link to the RSS file in the head section - i.e. near the <title> tag.

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS feed" href="http://example.org/rss.xml" />

This link is what triggers the RSS icon in Firefox and the IE7 beta.
