After some initial fatal errors, I started over and things are going much better. Appreciate this module a great deal!
(So far, it's working better for me for D6 than prime357's solution, which worked flawlessly for me going to D5).
On my most recent try, everything went just about perfectly (I had to up the max_execution_time to 120 in php.ini)
It finished and listed the number of items imported.
However, the last (I'm guessing on the number) 100 posts or so did not import. Nothing after about October of last year.
I checked the wordpress db and verified that the posts are there. So I'm not sure why they didn't come in. No timeout or other errors on the import run.
I don't know much about the PHP.ini file, but noticed there are quite a few timeout settings of various kinds there. Could it be one of those?
Other ideas?

#1
Examined the xml file and discovered that something is breaking the actual export.
Any advice still appreciated, but it looks like the import process itself is not the issue.
#2
Marking as fixed, latest version 6.x-2.x-dev checks for valid WXR file and implements batch API to prevent timeouts.
