Issue Summary
Is there any way to display site "mission" when Front Page is activated? It would be very useful...

In your theme settings (click the "configure" link next to your theme in the admin), there should be a list of options such as mission, logo, sitename, etc, each with a checkbox next to it. Make sure that Mission is checked in your theme settings.
If it is checked, then it seems there's something wrong with the theme you're using, or they haven't included the $mission variable in page.tpl.php

everything is set up correctly, but mission is not displayed on front_page, i.e. when I am using advanced front page....

Be sure that in site information your default front page is set to "front_page".
It works just fine with the Garland theme.
