Description

Copying this info in from an email for easy reference, this was a wish list of features that may or may not match the things we're identifying in making things look like PhpBB:

general:

* merge topics
* move posts
* quote prior posts
* user list: (who's viewing the forum at that moment)
* stats (most posted that day, week, month, etc)
* search options just for forums
* include 'go to page X' on top and bottom of each page (currently only on bottom)
* allow users to choose how they view posts (reverse or regular chronological order)
* add 'in reply to' option, allowing fans to respond to a particular post within a forum topic.
* permalink for forum posts?
* News syndication? (clickable ticker of news headlines, to help remind forum people that there is life and excitement beyond the forums) (news feed is based on whatever user environment the user is in)

Global:

* allow for limited moderation access, allowing certain moderators access to handle just one forum area. (ie: german area, etc)
* change forum taxonomy depending on territory. This would not require the forums to be local (i don't think) but would provide a targeted area of the forums to be superserved to different countries as needed.

Multilingual:
Germany described their ideas, listed below. not saying i agree with all of them, but fyi:
* We were thinking that the best idea would be to have "language flags" on top level when entering the forum, so not the country is relevant for the user for chosing where to go but the LANGUAGE the user wants to communicate with.
* There could be for example an englisch, german, italian, spanisch, french flag on top level.
* By clicking on the flags there are the threads in the specific language (which could be seperated into sections, or all threads with search function) [right now there are too many different approaches on the various GWS's regarding forum topics, and that always leaves the question of visibility of threads / topics open when entering the language forum].
* On the home.html then the current language-based news for the user (ip detection) should be displayed
* When logging in as a german user then the user should be forwarded to a page with all the german-language posts be displayed as well with easy access for the user...
* we do not want to prevent german users from entering or posting for example within the french forum, or the english-speaking forum (which could work as the "master" forum then), we just want to give the user an enviroment where everthing feels right and the user knows what he can do and how to get there

More of a feature request I guess.

A lot of these are moderator/admin-related tools. We should probably start a separate meta-issue for that. I was going to do that too but ran out of hours this week and frankly didn't want to stare too long at phpBB's backend.

While the admin backend is not all that great to look at, phpBB's moderator tools are *nice*. We can do them largely with VBO but we'll need a bunch of custom actions and need to work out the right way to do permissions. It's a fairly big task as there's a lot of different things one can do with moderation.

One of the issues with the back end is going to be that we are cobbling together lots of different modules that have their settings in all different places. A good admin back end would have one easy place to set everything up. Not even sure this is possible, just saying.

I mentioned this on IRC. I think if you stick with a discrete set of modules, you could make a "landing" page that would take you to each of the modules' settings pages.
