Our business has 3 target audiences: Consumers, Business, and Government. We are trying to shift our website design to section off our website to target these audiences individually to increase our marketability. Basically, we will make three copies of our website and then make subtle changes to each of them based on what interests the target audience.
Does anyone have experience with this? What is the best approach? Are there any modules which will help?
Should I mimic the design of dell.com (home, small business, public sector, enterprise)?
Can a Modal Window pop-up for new visitors and ask them which audience they belong to and redirect them adequately?

I'm doing the same kind of project these days. What I did was to do a really simple home page with three blocks that allow people to choose their "profile" and then access a customized version of the site.
I think the important thing would be to keep thr user "in context" once he selects a section. The user should be able to change section easily from the footer links for example, but all the menus and links he sees on the top of the page should be related to his "context".
Would be interested to discuss this more with you..

Distiguising the sections
How should I distinguish the various sections?
I'm using pathauto. Should I use taxonomy (consumer, business, government) and have pathauto create page URLs based on the taxonomy field?
For example:
If the taxonomy of the page is "Business" then the link will be:
http://mysite.com/business/example.htmlOr if it's "Government" then the link will be:
http://mysite.com/government/example.htmlThat would work
Pathauto will help. Also, check out http://drupal.org/project/sections
