how to install openssl in drupal

I'm a complete newbie at administering drupal and was wondering how to install openssl so that i can use the SMTP module.
I need it becasue gmail requires ssl.

Is there such thing as an email that doesn't require ssl??

openSSL is software

openSSL is software independent of Drupal. You may need to ask your host if their PHP installation includes SSL support.
