I was trying to find out if there is a way to "lock" forums so that only registered members of a website having viewing/content priviledges. I have been told, that there is no way using Drupal to do this. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this matter.

I am not sure if that fits to your problem, but you could try the module taxonomy_access..
