truncate option for long text

It would be very handy to have a general option to truncate any text that is longer than n characters.

I.e. a new admin option on
/admin/settings/members
"Truncate text with more characters than:" [number field]

That way on
/members/
If you show data from multi-line textfields with like 400 characters, is does not cause the table to become crazy long.

A truncated field would end with "..."

Would be super useful.
