However with the image_FUpload field, it's just showing the file list with the name of the image(s), similar to when files have just been "attached" to a node.
Why is this so? It would be very beneficial for it to display the actual image(s) on the node page itself.

grandcat commentedThis is a setting you have to set in CCK's display options. After having set this, you will be able to see images.
