Did you consider the http://drupal.org/project/migrate module? It seems really comprehensive.

Consider pooling your effort with Mike Ryan so we have a better unified solution.

If you decide you should continue your own effort, you have to describe how it is different from Migrate and when is it better suited too to avoid user confusion.

That is definitely possible. I have just barely played with Migrate, but I believe that some of the goals are different.

I'm going to try to spend some time with both, to see whether this module should exist.
