Would like to assume the role as owner of http://drupal.org/project/ip_locator (abandoned module)...

Issue submitted @ http://drupal.org/node/474818 but no response. Thanks in advance.

Can I ask why?

There are already two rather similar modules for this purpose:

http://drupal.org/project/ad_geoip

Even a third one (which probably should be marked abandoned too).

Certainly.

I saw this module whose project page says,

... there will be no work done on it until a new maintainer is found.

I'm trying to stick with using D6 primarily, especially after I finished reading Pro Drupal Dvlp't 2nd Ed. (and D6SN). This also happened to be one of the only modules (that I could see) that appeared to need a maintainer, that had been abandoned for (almost) two years, and that was also a 6.x project.

However I do see your point with the other modules -- (obviously) your call though...

So, you are mainly looking for a project to maintain?

I am not sure what others think, but I consider "abandoned modules" as a sort of graveyard...

Especially for modules that have a lot of similar modules around.

If you want to maintain some module, I'll gladly help you to find one.

Well sure - that'd be awesome. I could still take over the one as well (unless it's going "away"? Or, of course, unless you feel otherwise). Just a thought but regardless, thanks (in advance) for the offer.

Do you want to do something with IP geolocation or would other projects also be interesting to you?

I'd like to work with IP geolocation but other projects are definitely of interest to me. Any examples off the top of your head? Or priorities that would take precedence?

The current maintainer accepted this from a sense of responsibility, but would not mind getting help/offloading it.

However, this has the drawback of not having any involvement with Drupal 6 since the code is currently in core. On the other hand, we'll probably want to run the module on drupal.org once we move to Drupal 7, since we currently use this code.

We can also find something else.

Yeah after reading through the issues/history/current status, it feels like I'd almost be coming in a little "late" and, imho, I tend to agree with a lot of what was discussed (re: even the mere relevance of the module, core or contrib). Any other ideas by chance...? I appreciate your help by the way...

@jerdiggity: That's great you want to get started contributing! I would suggest posting to the development mailing list (see http://lists.drupal.org/listinfo/development) with your intentions, your background, what skills you have, what types of modules you're interested in maintaining, etc. That's usually where module developers announce abandoned projects and so might be a good place for you to meet someone with too much on their plate who would welcome some extra help. :)

@jerdiggity: Check my profile and see if there any of my modules you like; I could use some help.

@webchick: Thank you for the tip. I did just what you said too so (I suppose?) we'll see what happens -- thanks again!

@nancydru: Very clever name... :)

And thank you for the invite -- looks like you have a lot on your plate. I'd be interested in http://drupal.org/project/realname which, from what I can tell, has a hefty share of issues/requests... Your thoughts? (I just thought it might lighten your load a little bit lot, too.)

Title: Assume ownership of abandoned module » Taking over the ownership of IP locator
Status: Active » Closed (won't fix)

The original request seems rejected. I am changing the status of this report.

Project: Drupal.org site moderators » Drupal.org project ownership
Component: Project ownership » Ownership transfer
