Description
Hi,
It would be really cool if we could have all the chats and friend lists in collapsible/extensible jquery(?)-driven pop-up-layers.
It would save valuable place on the page and by the way look absolutely fancy.
I think the ha.bla module delivers a great inspiration and design-base of what I mean.
Regards,
Stefan

Yeah I 100% agree with that too, the only thing that puts me off about using this module is the face its in a block. I have so many blocks already and think the current design is rather cumbersome. However this is a great module and I look forward to watching it develop :D
I would love to see a chat UI similar to facebook and ha.bla
Kind regards
Niall

I totally agree. Although the ideal would be something like gmail and facebook where each conversation is a separate popup window, I'm wondering if an acceptable 1st step might be to have a single collapsible popup of essentially the same console block where you "tab" between multiple conversations?
Other than the work required to change up the UI, I'm also concerned about performance with multiple conversations open at the same time. Although I do check for all incoming msgs as I poll the server for refreshing the FriendPicker, the current architecture (normal Drupal behavior) has the block being refreshed every time you browse to a new page - so it has to recreate the entire conversation with every page refresh.
I'd like to change this to either use memcache or actually store the conversation on the local box, but that will require a significant amount of effort)...
So ... any great ideas or comments on teh architecture are most welcome.
Thanks for the input.

This would be great. Some more display space when being used - takes up less room when not.

@pahariwalla: Maybe it's an idea to realize block refreshes with this module or its technology?
There is also a 6.x-dev in the pipeline and pay attention to this comment that works well for me.
I hope it will help.
I'm really looking forward to a stable and ready release of this beautiful module! Thank you so much for your great work! :)

I like to surf on drupal.org... sometimes I find some really nice modules like this new one: http://drupal.org/project/appbar
Maybe it's possible to create a bridge and use its pop-ups for conversations, friend block and settings.
Hope it helps. Have fun! :)

@design.er thanks for the great leads .. looking forward to checking them out.
looking forward to spending some time on IM .. Last 3 months I've been traveling, getting surgery, working 2 jobs, now packing up the house getting ready to move across the U.S. arrrgh!! But, being offline for a week while sharing the driving means I can spend some time on IM at 100 kmph .. ;-)
Thanks ! p.s. there might be some folks up in Oregon who are working on pop-up blocks for IM and I hope to hear from them soon .

Wow, it seems that you was pretty busy and will stay busy for the next couple of weeks.
I wish you all the best for your move to Oregon! :)
BTW: I really hope that we could merge this two great modules (IM & Appbar) to reach the next level in drupal entertainment.
Have a nice time! :)

any joy with this issue?? or even If we can hard code the blocks to use ??
#9
Hi Rajinder, I hope you're fine and your move to Oregon was successful.
Here I found another input for a nice IM design: http://drupal.org/project/bowob
The difference is that you have to create a chat on bowob.com and download some files then it connects it with your drupal site. So it seems to be not a duplication of IM.
#10
Yes, and that's the problem I find with it: it depends on a third party server.. All messages are sent to it. Thus making chatting non-private. It also makes you dependent on BoWob.com. You are unable to run the "module" without it.
Personally I like the direction Instant Messenger is taking, the only problem is the UI. If it was somehow implented like BoWob UI (which is pretty much a replica of Facebook's chat panel), I think this module would have much more success.
In fact, it'd be an ideal candidate for AppBar.
#11
Yes, this is the reason why this thread was opened. ;) I think we all wish to see IM integrated in AppBar. My hint with BoWob was just to provide inspiration and sources for similar modules and their designs. Maybe there is a way to save a lot of time if some of the architecture can be used as basis or inspiration.
#12
I agree, I think if Instant Messenger could work together with AppBar, it would be one of the most successful modules in Drupal. I hope to see it soon.

Hi there,
nice to know there's the idea of implemening such module. I'll follow this with attention:)
I was searching something like that, i found bowob too, i like the bar-like application way as the facebook one but i don't like at all that such module needs a third party server to work. I know it was even removed time ago from drupal modules because it wasn't properly a module. I'm not yet sure if this is a ordinary module since require external interaction. I wouldn't trust this that much, I don't enjoy my private data is sent to some other server.
Personally i don't see any good reason for being like that, but maybe the developer could enlight us.
i hope i can help with this too, maybe mixing together im and appbar modules

hey ..I have found similar thing ... in module feedback #project/feedback ... they have user footer hook to insert a block .. ( basically a form .. similar to our im module ...) if any one can copy and see the javascript and css this is possible ...

Hi, im plannning the next phase of my sites development and would love to include IM and Appbar integrated as part of that. Ive been on this thread from the start and see lots of interest and was just wondering if there has been any progress. Thanks to those involved for some great modules.
Kind Regards

Hello everyone in IM Land who are interested in the popup/appbar concept. I hope that you can forgive me for being so lame the last 3 months. My drive across country and move to the old farmhouse http://ouryearatthefahm.blogspot.com has been incredibly everything (wonderful, hard, exciting, dirty, and most of all time-consuming).
Things are settling down, including my work schedule, so I'm very happy to finally be back into IM. I'm going to go through all the issues, and at least respond to all of them, and then I'll get serious about popups.
Thanks for your patience. Looking forward to making this happen.
Best
Raj

Hey Raj, nice to read that you're still alive and things are settling down again in your life. :)
I'm really looking forward to help you with testing the collaboration of IM and Appbar. :)

Hi,
the fun stopped too soon :-(
I made room for chat into the appbar module but now i discover the im module doesn't install on postgresql database for this reason: http://drupal.org/node/520034

/me joins the fray
Hi, I'm the maintainer of the Appbar module. I don't have time to work on the code for this directly at the moment, but of course let me know if any questions come up or there's anything I can do to help.

Tagging to make this easier to find.

Moving this discussion over to #643902: Define and architect the Multiple Pop-Up Conversations Major Makover for IM I will be referencing this issue as we build out the requirements there.
