I'm certainly not looking at building a site that will go on to have millions of users on it. The userbase will be less than 1% actually.
However, I want to setup a business networking site, much on the lines of LinkedIn in terms of functionality and the quick loading facility like it offers, and I have no programming support, 'coz I don't have money to put into it at the moment.
I can purchase books and tutorials to learn Drupal (You can as well suggest some good ones that can help me create my project).
Also, will it be easy enough to integrate 3rd party applications like Basecamp (for example) with a completely Drupal-powered networking site?
Thanks in advance for all your help :-)

Up to you
It depends entirely on you -- on the tools you bring when you sit down to study Drupal, and on your aptitude for learning. Can you do your own web design, HTML, and CSS? Are you comfortable with PHP, Javascript and Jquery? The necessary pieces are all in the Drupal contributed module collection; it's up to you to knit them together.

A complex site!
LinkedIn is a complex site. It's one thing to understand Drupal, but we've found that the most difficult thing about building a site like LinkedIn is just making the decisions and putting together the logic to create an understandable and usable site. That being said, we've made a bunch of clone sites for fun to show how Drupal can be used to provide the same type of functionality as Flickr (explained here), Basecamp (explained here), YouTube, Twitter, and others.
If you're looking to get a quick understanding of the foundational elements of Drupal, I humbly recommend our training DVDs and video downloads on CCK, Views, and Drupal Theming.
Sorry if this ended up kind of sales-y, but if you're looking for resources, we've got em! :-)
Good luck with your project!
