I'm new to this CMS and was curious if you knew if I might encounter problems with installing Drupal and beginning to customize it... while our current WordPress site was active. Advice? I'm hearing I could get into trouble down the road if installing within a development/other directory on the server.

Well, you can install Drupal
Well, you can install Drupal in a subdirectory and populate it. When you're ready you can make it the primary site.
There's help here on how to do that.
Main issue is how to keep old and new sites running in parallel and manage the transition.
Same Project, Need More Help
Nice. It is the same which I am searching for. I have a wordpress site with huge nos of posts. Now I am thinking it to shift to Drupal. Is it possible to start populating the Drupal Installation in a subfolder and after a while I could publish it as Primary (Main) site? I am afraid of Importing WP Posts into Drupal. So, later I would want to maintain the wp-site as the archive. In fact, I am having some text link ads. I doubt, if I shift to Drupal, the links may be messed. Please guide, where to start.
