I have a small aviation based web site that has been up and running for over a year. It was set up to allow new members immediate access to post on the forums. For the last five days now this site has been attacked by over ten new users a day, all with gmail email addresses and what appears to be computer based user names, that place links to porn sites or other far-out blogs on the forums. Many of these are not even in English. I have been forced to edit the site set up so that all new users need approval before posting but that is a pain also. It does keep the trash off however. Are there any modules that would demand some type of verification or ask a new user to put in numbers or symbols--something a computer can't do? Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well.

Take a look at the CAPTCHA module and similar things like that. Theres also anti-spam modules. A look through the modules page should bring a few suggestions up for you to try.

Investigate it. I think for a small site it would be free and it is the advanced approach compared to Captcha (which might be totally suficient).

The Captcha module was not cutting it in my site.... Mollom module rocks!

Nothing wrong with Captcha, by the way, but when you let registered users skip it, you are toast
