We have a project now under way that needs to create lists of content not actually in the DB. I saw that the Allow different back-ends for Views issue is closed and the changes are committed to Views 3. Is there any chance of getting this into a 2.x release? If not, how soon might 3 develop into a (somewhat) stable release?

We have an immediate need for this and could commit some time to working on it if we can help.

I spoke to merlin in IRC this afternoon and he filled me in that this functionality is not being considered for 2.x for fear of breaking other modules or somehow messing up the upgrade path.
